Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)


In an era defined by digital connectivity and instantaneous data exchange, the reliability of electrical power has never been more critical. Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) stand as the silent guardians for bridging the gap.

More than an uninterruptible power source, advanced UPS also function as power conditioning, they actively filter electrical noise, smooth out harmful anomalies such as voltage transients, sags, surges, and noise that can degrade hardware or corrupt data.

Critical components using magnetic materials in UPS system design include:

  • Invert Output Filters: Powder Cores are utilized in UPS inverter output filters, where they function as highly efficient magnetic components that suppress high-frequency harmonic noise and electromagnetic interference, thereby ensuring clean and stable power transmission to sensitive devices.
  • Power Factor Correction (PFC) Inductors: Ferrite, amorphous, and nanocrystalline cores are used to build UPS PFC inductors, which align current and voltage waveforms to boost efficiency and reduce grid noise.
  • AC Input Filters: Ferrite, amorphous, and nanocrystalline cores are employed in UPS AC input filters, which suppress high-frequency noise and harmonics arising from incoming AC power to ensure clean, stable power transmission.
  • DC/DC Converters: Power cores featuring high & soft saturation and reliable inductance are ideal for making UPS DC/DC converters, which step up or down input voltage for power storage and transmission.

Power cores with high DC bias and soft saturation are mainly used for power storage inductors and DC mode chokes, Meanwhile ferrite and nanocrystalline cores are preferred for high-frequency transformers and EMI filters. The both are normally integrated for designing high-efficiency, noise-suppressed UPS systems
